Andrzej Dajnowski applies a wax coating to the top of the George A. Custer statue Tuesday in Monroe. Mr. Dajnowski is the director of Conservation of Sculpture & Objects Studio, Inc., Forest Park IL. He was hired by the City of Monroe to clean and preserve the 101-year-old statue. Mr. Dajnowski has developed a wax he claims will last 2-4 years, twice as long as other waxes used by conservationists. The metal is heated first and the wax is then applied to the hot surface. The statue is periodically waxed to protect the copper in the bronze from oxidizing and turning green. Mr. Dajnowski said that pigments in previous wax treatments give the statue it's black color. City Planner and Historic Preservation Officer Jeffrey Green said the current cleaning and waxing project was funded by a grant from the Community Foundation of Monroe County. The statue was last treated in 2010 in preparation for the Centennial anniversary.
