A giant field of pink, purple and white cosmos flowers fills the land behind Louie Mattero's Monroe Township home. The stunning display was planted by Mr. Mattero's son-in-law, Andy Ingels, who also happens to be his next door neighbor. Mr. Mattero grew up on the swath of land, which is bordered on one side by the River Raisin and the other by S. Dixie Rd. The land had been leased out for general farming until recent years. Mr. Mattero and his wife, Florence, are enjoying the new scenery. "I was just saying this morning, 'How close to heaven can I get?' " Mr. Mattero said while taking a break from mowing Thursday.

Power plants in Monroe County have worked extensively with the club to help preserve the lotus beds in their adjacent waterways, and point to the thriving beds also as evidence of their efforts to clean and reduce any effects power production may have on the environment.
